Accident By Brake Rotor

Posted by Shawn Fennox on November 2, 2014 at 2:05 PM
One job! All they had was one job.
Putting up freight on October 30th before I went to visit my family was going great! I had put up a crate and a half just on my own within a hour or two, I was really ready to go visit my family and friends for Halloween so I wanted to have everything up by close that night.
I had asked my fellow employees if inbetween customers they could put up brake rotors and clutches (Which was all on one cart, not many at all) while I continued to work on my second crate, they said they would. After a hour and a half had passed and the cart with rotors had only been moved out of the way and I kept seeing one of the employees just standing by the register not doing anything I said, "Fuck it I will just do them!"
So I quit working on my crate and was already on a role putting up the rotors, after about 4 of them I picked up a medium sized one, about the size of one for my Chevy Colorado so you can imagine it wasn't TOO big but big enough to cause damage.
As I picked up the rotor I felt the weight shift in the box, they all do that so I went to put it away, well the second the weight shifted the bottom of the box busted out and BAM! The rotor landed just above my steel toe on my left foot. There were plenty of customers in the store who knew the second it happened that something was wrong, I had never been a loud person, expecially one who cussed infront of people. I said the most worst words to say when customers are there but I didn't care I was in extreme pain.
Right away Jess, a commercial driver, was right beside me. She immedietly had me sit down, she removed my shoe and my whole sock was red and dripping blood all over the place! Almost right away she got a ton of papertowels and was pressing them up against my sock to try to keep the blood in my body even though I was way dizzy. During all this my store manager was on the phone, and even though we were yelling for him, they only told him that I had dropped a rotor, not that it was on my foot so he didn't know until he came around the corner to see a puddle of blood and me laying on my back crying. Right away he did call 911 and the nice men who helped me cut off my sock and put a legit bandage on my foot.
When the Ambulance showed up I was scared, I had never been in one. They got me up on the stretcher and I got on my way to the hospital.
It wasn't till I got to the hospital that I got trully scared after they took the xray and discovered a chip in my bone, they said they would have to surgically open it up, clean it, and use metal rods to keep it straight as it healed. I couldn't stop crying in fear of something going wrong! It was trully scary to me, my fiance Andrew was there with me pretty much from the time I got to the hospital till I left 24 hours later. The food was good but I am still scared to do too much, it's only in a splint right now, it will be in a cast tomorrow.
While I was there my managers and fellow employees kept texting me making sure I was okay, my District called and wanted to make sure I was okay, my Store manager kept saying he wanted to make sure I knew that what ever the Dr says monday he will do everything to get me back to work, even if it just means sitting and answering the phone. He doesn't know that my Dr already said I won't be able to return to work for a few weeks as getting dressed, trying to drive to work while taking my meds, trying to stay awake to answer phones, also the fact that the bathroom is WAY too far away, I would never make it in time.
I love work but I am worried more about my OWN health then anything else.
